What is Utility Approval for Solar?

Utility approval (also called interconnection) is required for every home solar installation that stays connected to the electrical grid. It's the process of applying for and receiving permission from your local electric company to install your system and connect it to the grid.

What does the process involve?

There are two main steps: permission to install, and permission to operate.

Permission to install

Before your installation is scheduled, Palmetto submits an application on your behalf that includes your energy usage, roof specifications, and the engineering design of your solar system. We'll work with your utility company to finalize approval before booking your installation date.

Permission to operate

After installation is complete and passes final inspections, Palmetto applies for "permission to operate" (PTO) from your utility company. In most cases, a utility representative will visit your home to confirm your system meets safety and metering requirements and install a new bi-directional meter that tracks both the energy you produce and the energy you use.

What is net metering?

If your solar panels produce more than your home uses, your utility company may credit you for the extra energy sent back to the grid. This is called net metering. Not every utility offers it, but if yours does, those credits go toward your electricity bill.
