Understanding Solar Production vs. Energy Consumption

Updated over a week ago

When you go solar with Palmetto, understanding how your solar system works is key to maximizing its benefits. Two important terms to know are solar production and energy consumption.

What is Solar Production?

Solar production refers to the amount of electricity your solar panels generate from sunlight. This production varies throughout the day and across seasons based on factors such as weather conditions. You can monitor your system’s solar production using the Palmetto app to track how much energy your system generates over time.

What is Energy Consumption?

Energy consumption refers to the amount of electricity your home uses. This includes power drawn from your solar system as well as from the utility grid when your solar production isn’t enough to meet your needs. Appliances, lighting, HVAC systems, and electronic devices all contribute to your overall energy consumption.

You can calculate this as: Your total energy usage = (Total Solar Production) - (Solar Energy Sent Back to Grid) + (Energy Grid Consumption).

How Do Production and Consumption Work Together?

  • When production is GREATER THAN consumption: Your solar system generates more electricity than your home uses. This excess energy is typically sent back to the grid, and depending on your local utility policy, you may receive credits through net metering.

  • When production is LESS THAN consumption: If your home uses more electricity than your solar panels produce, the additional power comes from the utility grid. This often happens at night or on cloudy days when solar production is lower.

  • When production and consumption are BALANCED: Ideally, your solar system produces enough energy to cover your household needs, reducing or eliminating your reliance on grid electricity.

A Note on Your Utility Bill

It's important to know that your utility bill often does not show your system's total solar production. Utility meters primarily record what is delivered from the grid to your home and what is exported from your solar system to the grid. To see the true amount of electricity your panels have produced, you should check your Palmetto app.

How to Optimize Your Energy Usage

  • Use high-energy appliances during peak sunlight hours to maximize direct solar energy use. This includes washing machines, dishwashers, and air conditioners, which helps reduce dependence on the electrical grid.

  • Monitor your energy usage in the Palmetto app to identify trends and adjust consumption habits.

  • Consider battery storage solutions to store excess energy for use when production is low.

  • Improve home energy efficiency by upgrading insulation, using energy-efficient appliances, managing heating and cooling with programmable thermostats, and turning off unused lights and devices.

By understanding the difference between solar production and energy consumption, you can take control of your energy usage and maximize your solar savings!
