Understanding Your Solar Billing

We know your solar billing can feel a bit confusing at first, and we want to make sure you understand exactly how it works. Palmetto is here to help you transition to a greener future while maximizing your savings. Here's everything you need to know about your bills and how you can get the most out of your solar system!

1. Why do I still have a utility bill with solar?

Even with your solar panels in place, you're still connected to your local utility grid. The law requires this connection, ensuring that you always have access to electricity, especially during times when your solar system isn't producing enough power—like at night or on cloudy days.

What's Included in Your Utility Bill?

Your utility bill covers grid access fees and any extra energy you may need to purchase from them when your solar system isn't producing enough power. This bill will be lower over time as your solar energy usage increases!

For instance, if your solar system generates 29.1 kWh but your household consumes 31.9 kWh, the additional energy will be sourced from your utility company.

2. Will I get two bills?

Yes, you'll receive two separate bills:

  • Palmetto Energy Plan Bill: This covers your payment to Palmetto for your solar system and energy plan.

  • Utility Bill: This bill is from your local utility company, covering grid access and any additional energy used from the grid.

Though it might feel like a "double bill," remember that your solar system is actively reducing your reliance on the grid. The Palmetto Energy Plan bill ensures you're paying for the solar energy and services Palmetto provides, while the utility bill covers only the grid access and any additional energy you draw when solar production is low.

3. How can I reduce my utility bill?

We understand that you want to save as much as possible. Here are a few simple tips to lower your utility bill and make the most out of your solar system:

  • Use Energy During Sunny Hours: Try to run things like your dishwasher, washing machine, and other high-energy appliances during the day when your solar panels are making the most power.

  • Switch to energy-efficient appliances. Energy-efficient appliances use less power, which helps reduce your overall consumption and lower your utility bill. Consider switching to LED bulbs, energy-efficient refrigerators, and smart thermostats to make your home even more energy-efficient.

4. How long before I see maximum savings?

It's important to be patient during the transition to solar energy. As your solar system operates and you adjust your energy habits, your savings will grow over time. You'll start seeing significant reductions in your utility bill as your solar energy usage increases and you become more energy efficient.

Remember, this is a long-term investment in both your home and the planet! The more you adapt and optimize your energy consumption, the greater the savings you'll see over the years. We're here to support you as you build a more sustainable future.

5. Why is my bill still as high as before solar?

A few things can keep your bill higher than you expected, even with solar working as it should. Your contract may include a small annual rate increase, your home may be using more energy than before, and production naturally dips in shorter, cloudier months.

Your Palmetto Energy Plan payment stays fixed. The part that moves is your utility bill, which reflects how much grid power you use and the rates your utility sets.

6. What if my savings don't match what I was quoted?

The savings estimate at the time of sale was based on your system size, your local utility rates back then, and your past energy use. Real life can shift those numbers for a few reasons: utility rates have gone up since your quote; your household is using more or less energy than before; weather, shading, or output looked different than projected.

If your savings look well off from what you were promised, reach out and ask for a Bill Review. We will compare your system's actual production against your current rates and walk you through exactly where the difference is coming from.

7. Why am I being charged during an outage or before my system was activated?

If your system was offline or not yet switched on, your home ran on grid power during that time, so your utility bill for those days will look higher. That is normal, and here is why.

  • Before permission to operate (PTO): your panels cannot send power to the grid or offset your home's usage until your utility grants PTO, which can take a few weeks after install, and until then your home runs fully on grid power.

  • During system outages: if your system goes offline for equipment issues, inverter maintenance, or grid requirements, your home pulls 100% from the utility until it is back up, so you will see a higher bill for those months.

These charges reflect real grid power your home used while your solar was not producing, so they are not errors. If your system has been down longer than you expected, or you have questions about your PTO timeline, reach out and we will take a look.

At Palmetto, we understand that the transition to solar energy can be a big change, but we're here for you every step of the way. If you have billing questions or concerns that you can't resolve on your own, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
