Moving, Selling, or Coming to the End of Your Solar Agreement

Whether you're selling your home, moving on, or approaching the end of your lease term, your Palmetto solar agreement has options to match. Here's everything you need to know.

Your options when selling

When you sell a home with a Palmetto Energy Plan (lease or PPA), you have three options.

1. Transfer your agreement to the new homeowner

They'll need to apply for a new Palmetto Energy Plan contract and pass a credit check. Once their application is approved and the home sale is finalized, the solar system will be transferred to their name. The new homeowner will then enjoy all the benefits of your solar system, including the automatic transfer of any remaining system warranties.

After the transfer, the new lessee retains the same options for buyout or prepayment as the original owner. For example, they may prepay the remaining balance or buy out the system at its Fair Market Value (FMV) during the home sale or after a specified period.

Important: If the buyer does not meet Palmetto's underwriting requirements, we may offer alternate solutions while preserving our rights under the lease.

Unless released in writing, you remain responsible for the lease until a transfer agreement is signed and the new owner is approved.

If you sell your home or transfer the lease without Palmetto's written approval, you will be in default of the lease agreement.

2. Prepay the lease or PPA

Prepaying means you pay off the remaining balance upfront. This can be a selling point for buyers who want the benefits of solar without taking on a monthly bill.

Prepaying retains Palmetto's ownership and maintenance responsibilities, ensuring continued coverage, while eliminating future monthly payments.

To request a prepay quote, complete the form below, email us at [email protected], or call 855-339-1831. Quotes are generated through a secure portal and are not sent as attachments.

3. Buy out the system

If you'd prefer to own the system outright, you can buy it out at its Fair Market Value (FMV).

To be eligible, the system must have been under contract for at least 5 years. Note that purchasing the system does not include future maintenance coverage.

If the buyer doesn't want the panels at all, removal is not handled by Palmetto and must be arranged through a qualified third-party contractor at your expense.

Check your contract for the specific terms that apply to your agreement.

You cannot take the system with you to a new home. Doing so is a lease violation and makes you responsible for paying the system's fair market value. If you want solar at your new home, we can set up a separate agreement for that property.

Ready to get started?

If you are in the process of selling your home, please complete the form below at least 60 days before the closing date.

Please be prepared to share the following information:

  • Proof of the impending home sale (listing agreement, accepted offer)

  • Your chosen option (prepay or transfer)

  • For transfers:

    • New homeowner's full name, email address, and phone number.

    • Proof of ownership from the buyer (deed to the property, property title, or recent utility bill reflecting the buyer's name)

Once submitted, a team member will follow up with next steps.

Coming to the end of your lease term

When your lease term comes to an end, you have three options:

  1. Extend the lease under similar conditions.

  2. Buy out the system at fair market value to assume full ownership and end lease payments.

  3. Request panel removal. Palmetto will restore your roof to a watertight condition at no additional cost, as specified in your contract.

If the account holder passes away

The lease transfers to the estate and remains in effect. To ensure a smooth transition, complete the transfer request form and select "Service Transfer" in the Request field, then provide the following:

  • Death certificate

  • Documentation identifying authorized estate signers

  • Buyer or new owner's full name, phone number, and email address

  • Copy of the buyer or new owner's ID

  • Voided check from the buyer or new owner if setting up ACH payments

  • Estimated or confirmed closing date

Once submitted, the account will be updated to authorize the appropriate party. The new authorized individual can then set up payments without risk of duplicate or unauthorized charges.

Have a Palmetto Comfort Plan?

If you're selling your home, you have two options:

  • Transfer the plan. If you're in years 1 through 5, the Comfort Plan can be transferred to the new homeowner if they qualify and sign a transfer agreement.

  • Buy out the lease. If a transfer isn't possible, you can buy out the lease. The amount depends on which year of the lease you're in.

Relocating a Comfort Plan system is only possible in rare cases and requires the new home to be in the same utility district and service area. You'd be responsible for any relocation, redesign, and approval costs.
